Small Business and the Economy (preview from the book) In 1988, the results of an 18-year long survey were reported in the Wall Street Journal. What was revealed was counter to the accepted way of thinking. During that period, Fortune 500 companies (big business) had actually eliminated jobs while the rest of the economy got credit for creating new jobs. For every two jobs eliminated by Fortune 500 companies, eleven new jobs were created by non Fortune 500 companies. This statistic was a slap in the face to entrenched, old-line economists who continually preached to the highest levels of US government that the health of our economy depended on what happens in big business.
